Discover all benefitsThe splendid forest area Ryckevelde has another ace up its sleeve. In addition to the many facilities for cyclists and riders, there is now also a beautiful jogging path. Due to its location on centuries-old sand ridges, Domaine Ryckevelde has not only a special ecological value but also an excellent recreational value. Both loops of this nature route start at the information column in the parking lot on Holleweg.
The red loop of 2.3 km runs along the castle park, where a round trip around the neo-Gothic castle and the pond is made. The path crosses the former railway bed and follows a winding forest path along the edge of the forest until you are back at the starting point.
The green loop of 6.2 km turns left shortly after the start and follows the beautifully wide Rijckeveldestraat. Here, you walk between the pines on old land dunes. The Domaine covers 15 hectares of pine forests. A management plan is being carried out to transform the originally homogeneous plantations into mixed stands through regular thinning. Then, you turn right again on the former railway bed Brugge - Eeklo, which has been converted into a hiking and cycling path that is easy to walk on. At the beginning of Oude Dosweg, you turn right. Here, there is a connection to the Sijsele running route (6.5 km). A little further on the right, you briefly walk through a young reforestation and then straight along the narrow path. At an open heath landscape, you turn left and pass the home garden. This is a nature educational garden specifically designed for blind and visually impaired people. After that, the route turns right and you walk over three bridges. A bit further on, you see the castle on the right side. You continue left to the Meersbeek and follow it until the road to St.-Kruis. This historic road was already marked on the maps of Pieter Pourbus (1561-1571) and connected Oedelem with St.-Kruis. Here, the green loop briefly runs together with the red loop but then turns left into the military area. Once out of the forest, the path turns right and leads towards the former railway bed, where you then turn right. Here, you walk briefly along the especially valuable Schobbejakshoogte, which is home to some rare plants of dry heath and nutrient-poor sandy soils. It is also a paradise for many insects, such as crickets, butterflies, and beetles. Along this section, there is an interval zone of 700 meters where you can go full throttle. Back at Margaretha van Vlaanderenlaan, you turn left and continue together with the red loop back to the starting point.
