Description by the author

Outside the hunting season you can walk in the immense forests of Saint-Hubert. We are in a maze of GR, educational learning trails, mountain bike trails and local hiking trails. A lot of weathered asphalt and pebbles, donated dirt roads and sometimes soggy peat are part of your game today. Park on Place du Fays (V) near the statue with the deer at the roundabout at the intersection of the N808 and N849. On foot, take the N849 to Nassogne to immediately go up the second street on the right, rue du Thiers. At the top, turn sharply left at a viewpoint with two rest benches on the Way of Poland. To the right of asphalt meadows, to the left alternating thin deciduous forest and meadows. At a walking sign on the left, you go straight, you now have pebbles under your feet. Just before the yellow fence, take the path on the right. At the end of it, in the countryside, turn left on the asphalt. Close your eyes for a moment beyond the game grid and enjoy the peat area further. You now walk almost 2 km through La Blanche Fagne, the Witte Veen. If you are as lucky as we are, you will see a boar sprinting away from you when you leave your mobile phone. Where a paved road comes from the left, you go straight ahead and 50 m further, at rest bench 1 and the information panel, turn right. Further on the first pebble path on the left, with the signage of the blue and green rectangles. You follow this path for 3 km, first downhill through the Fagne de la Dôneûse with a view of the marshy peat on the right, then descending again through the King Albert Forest, where more and more beech trees dominate. Open your lungs. The path makes a sharp left turn, you now cross the Bois Saint-Hubert. And again, it goes up, even if it doesn't bother you at first. On the side of the road – you have already noticed this – bilingual information panels tell you simple facts about the forest. Understandable for children who can walk a lot. Where you go back on the asphalt, you go straight, towards the Carrefour du Sapin. The road now winds uphill. At T-jump, you turn left, cross the Palogne stream and at the French information panel, turn right onto the forest trail. You follow the tracks of muddy tires, which quickly turn into a parallel path next to the stream. The hoof prints of deer and deer are similar to the trajectory of an off-road motorcycle. Finally, you arrive at a clearing with a few benches and a sober monument to King Albert 2. The grandfather of our King Albert, because it is said that he stopped for the last time at this beloved place in the fall of 1933. Again a municipal information board with some additional walking ideas. You continue straight, through the asphalt, with the GR. A soggy adventure awaits you, but to the right behind the first row of trees, quite a few hikers have already cleared a new dry path. The path nods to the left, you nod, while on the right you get a canvas open to a green and hilly landscape. After 500 m of descent, you cross a crossroads, briefly uphill and then pleasantly downhill again. And look, we're still on the GR. At the gate (No access), choose left along the fence. With a first nod and then in the corner on the right. With a bit of luck, you'll see wild boar and roe deer stirring. In this way, you descend to the Etang du Prieur. There, against all odds, you choose the path on the right and always along the fence on the bridge. Upstairs you will see bighorn sheep and soon – if you turn right at another fence in front of a door – a pack of deer. And that's how you arrive – of course – at the entrance of Game Park 3, the Animal Park. You can also have a drink there. From there, follow the asphalt past the impressive Ferme de Chîrmont 4. A good 100 m further, you can turn left onto a forest road with two banks. There, all roads lead to your starting point. You have a beautiful view of the basilica and the old abbey. We warmly recommend a visit to this Saint-Hubert basilica with crypt and terrace after business.
