Up and down around Avelgem

This tour takes you between the hills of the spring classics - minus the slopes on the cobblestones. It goes up and down a little and we go back along the Scheldt and the old arms of the Scheldt, to get something.

The itinerary

Go to the St-Martinuskerk on the Daniël Vermandereplein in Avelgem. Pedal next to the Te Biechte RD café in the Kerkstraat, direction KP 93. At the intersection with the traffic lights RD then RA in the Sint-Janstraat. Then pedal LA into Gabriel Herpoelstraat, one-way traffic, but not for cyclists. At the end of the street, cross Kerkhofstraat RD and follow the path along the cemetery to KP 93. LA to FP85. Turn with the RA road, ignore the Knokstraat on the left and follow the Albert Decockstraat to the end. ● Cross the road between the poles and pedal LA until your RA can turn into the Achterdriesstraat. Ignore a dead end street on the left and pass the farm Ten Legenbos (1729) with horse board. At the fork after RA. Meander further into the agricultural landscape, on a narrow paved road between two canals. Ignore the Kloosterstraat on the right and continue following the Konijnstraat until the end. ● RA through the Pontstraat until KP 85. RD to KP 98. On the right, in the middle of the fields, is the white blind chapel (1) with a roof of red tiles and "walled" with a green hedge. Turn further on RA into Paepestraat. Ignore all side streets and at the T-junction, follow Brewery Street LA.

Memorial to the true Flanders

You pass the Otegem agglomeration sign, choose LA at the junction, then turn RA into the Minister Lavensstraat and continue cycling to a square. LA and at the end of RA Street to the end. LA on the way to the church along the football fields of KV Blauwvoet Otegem to the T-junction. RA passed the memorial of Jef Planckaert, a true Flandrien, at the church in Otegem. Pedal here, as well as RD, next to the Sint-Amand café in the Ingooigemstraat, in the direction of Ingooigem. ● Ignore the side streets and continue cycling to FP 98. RA in Mussestraat, direction KP 89. You pedal through a beautiful open landscape, pass a beautiful linden tree with a chapel of trees and turn at the next RA fork. ● You always walk along the Mussestraat. Enjoy the open landscape with 360° panorama and turn LA at the end. Follow the priority road to the first intersection. RA in Ruiffeleindestraat. Don't worry about back roads and winding paths and golf all the way to FP 89. LA to FP28. In a bend you pass the Sint-Arnolduskapel and at the junction with a road for local traffic on the left, turn RA into Zoutstraat. ● Ignore the waffle street immediately on the right and continue to follow Zoutstraat RD until the next fork point. R.A. Kaankouter. Ignore Kaandries on the right and Drieskouter on the left and pass the tea room until you reach KP 28. Drive almost RD towards KP 8 and follow the Kouterweg to the T-junction.

Ascent of the Tiegemberg

LA along the agglomeration sign of Tiegem and Hoeveslagerij Cornette, where you can go for all kinds of locally grown meats, and further to the T-junction next to the church of Tiegem. LA and immediately after RA next to the café St-Arnoldus, in the Kapellestraat, direction Anzegem. Skip the back roads and pass the brick chapel at the corner of the Ommegangstraat. ● Here you start the climb of the Tiegemberg. Pass the equestrian statue of St. Arnoldus, the Te Lande party hall with the giant mushroom, which all cycling enthusiasts know thanks to the classics of the Flemish spring on TV, and the Boskant restaurant. ● From here you pedal along a bike path to KP 8. You are then halfway to the top of the Tiegemberg. Turn RA onto Doornstraat, direction KP 53. Ignore the back roads and go down to the T-junction with FP 53. RA direction KP 15 then LA in the Bassegembosstraat. Turn with the road on the right, cycle along the Bassegembos, ignore Tweehoeven on the right and turn further into Los Angeles into Kleimolenstraat. ● Ignore the Bassegemstraat on the right and follow the Kleimolenstraat to the end. YARD. Ignore a street on the left and ride an RD bike in front of the Kaster agglomeration sign. Get off, ignore a cul-de-sac on the right and leave the Groeningestraat on the right after the turn. RD across the one-way street, where you can only enter as a cyclist to the priority road. LA and immediately after RA in the Juliaan Claerhoutstraat, on the cobblestones until KP 15 at the church of Kaster. It is indicated here five times. Cycle around the church, direction KP 18 and climb RA through the Broeklindeweg in the open landscape. You will be rewarded with a beautiful view. Turn further into RA into Smeierstraat. Skip a street on the left, turn at the end of the street from Los Angeles and pedal further between meadows and loose buildings.

Upstream along the Scheldt

Ignore the Langestraat on the left and cross the railway. RD Kwadenbulk in and so on with a difficult climb to the T-junction. LA passed the church of Gijzelbrechtegem and directly RA next to Lokaal De Bergrust, in the Bouvelostraat. It immediately increases significantly. ● At the junction with the white Bouvelokapel (2), you pedal LA and at the first RD intersection in the Kruiskestraat. Follow it to the T. RA junction across the Rosstraat to KP 18. ● RA to FP38. You pedal between fields and along a grove to a T. YARD junction. Go further until you can turn into LA from Holdestraat at the first intersection, just before the first house. You will walk along a quiet road, passing the café on foot and by bike Bouvelo Bouverie, specialized in excrement and team building until KP 38. RD Blaarhoek, direction KP 4. Ignore kloosterstraat on the left and Blaarhoekstraat on the right and continue to follow Blaarhoek RD. ● Ignore a street on the right and continue cycling on a hollow road to the T-junction. Follow Kwadenbulk, ignore Kloosterhoek on the left, cross the RD and continue cycling through the Beekstraat to the end. RA and immediately after LA in the Zwalmstraat. At the crossroads in the middle of the RD fields. Skip the road for cyclists to Elsegem on the left, turn into Galgestraat at the junction after LA and continue winding through the agricultural landscape until you reach the N453. RD in Kortrijkstraat to KP 4 on the Scheldt. YARD. Follow the Scheldt upstream along the Scheldt to KP 16. RD to FP19. Pedal under the Kluisbergen Bridge and pedal RA to KP 19. ● LA, around an Oude Scheldearm and Kloron YC Avelgem, direction KP 17. In the clubhouse Cafe Khoron, everyone is welcome for a drink and a snack. Normally, you cycle RD to the Scheldt and follow it to KP 17. But due to work on the Kluisbergen lock, the towpath is closed. The work will last until 2020.
Road diversion
After the yacht club and the T'Kindt RA mill tower, pedal down the Kaaistraat, then turn LA into the Kapellestraat. Follow it to the end and turn into the country road after the white chapel LA. At the RA T-junction and further along the country road. A little further on, you pedal next to the Rijtgracht. The country road turns to asphalt and you pedal up to a bridge. On the right is the church of Waarmaarde. LA to FP 17 on the Scheldt. ● AR to FP57. On the other side, you can see a factory ruin and the remains of the old Ruien power station from 1958. You cycle around a swinging bowl and under a bridge. On KP 57 you leave the Scheldedijk. RA, direction FP 11. You cycle along a gravel road, next to an old arm of the Scheldt to KP 11. LA on a narrow paved road, direction KP 99. ● Ignore the Kareelovenstraat on the right and walk along another old arm of the Scheldt to KP 99. If you feel like it, you can cycle 100 m RD to Chalet 't Zakje, with a beautiful terrace. But our tour is RA via the Scheldelaan towards KP 93 to the starting point of the church of Avelgem.
