Until deep into the 20th century, Waregem, Beveren-Leie, Desselgem, and Sint-Eloois-Vijve were typical rural villages in West Flanders. Agriculture prevailed, and the influence of the church and faith was particularly strong. It is therefore no surprise that chapels were erected here and there, most dedicated to Mary.
These chapels served various purposes: to ask for protection, as a thank you for the many supports, or to plead for healing. In the 1950s and 1960s, many of these chapels increasingly came under pressure. Many rural roads were unable to handle the continuously increasing traffic and had to be widened, often at the expense of the chapels. Fortunately, many chapels were renovated, replaced, or moved.
As of 2018, our society looks different. The chapels are more and more silent witnesses of our past. All the more reason to highlight them extra through this cycling route.
