Until deep into the 20th century, Waregem, Beveren-Leie, Desselgem, and Sint-Eloois-Vijve were typical West Flemish rural villages. Agriculture was predominant and the influence of the church and faith was particularly strong. It is therefore not surprising that chapels were erected here and there, most of them dedicated to Mary.

These chapels were established for various reasons: to ask for protection, as a thank you for the many supports, or to plead for healing. In the 1950s and 1960s, many of these chapels came increasingly under pressure. Many rural roads were unable to handle the constantly increasing traffic and had to be widened. Roadworks often came at the expense of the chapels. Fortunately, many chapels were converted, replaced, or relocated.

As of 2018, our society looks different. The chapels are more and more silent witnesses of our past. All the more reason to highlight them through this cycling route.
