Polder route

We start the trip at the Blankenbergse Dijk, next to the Sint-Pietersplas where various water sports are practiced. There is ample parking and a cafeteria. Via the new bicycle bridge over the Expressway, you can skate in a safe and comfortable way into the beautiful polder area. As the trip progresses, you discover the Uitkerkse Polders, an ancient open meadow landscape interwoven with ditches and canals. The expansive grasslands and water bodies with broad reed edges are a dream habitat for many water and meadow birds. Then you dive into the Meetkerkse Moeren, a nature reserve of 428 ha. The landscape mainly consists of streams and moist meadows and hay lands. The route takes you past beautiful farms and chapels and brings you back to Bruges via the Ghent-Ostend canal. At several places, there are rest benches where you can picnic and enjoy the landscape. A skating trip with a magnificent surface, beautiful nature, and an ever-present polder wind that gives you wings or challenges you to sporting efforts. If your sense of direction lets you down occasionally, this route is the perfect ally. The cycling network with its junctions guides you almost flawlessly through the expansive polders.
