Visiting three countries in one afternoon? It's possible in the north of the East Cantons, where you step from Moresnet-Chapelle through the Preusbos to the Three Country Point on the Vaalserberg (322 m).

The junction network of the East Cantons (900 km!) was established in 2013, but the southern part was only marked with signs in 2019 and the network for the northern municipalities will be inaugurated in June. We went out to explore! Our journey starts at junction 32 in Moresnet-Chapelle, in the extension of the dead-end Rue d’Aix, but you can also start at the chapel in the village (large parking at Place Arnold Franck) and walk via Rue du Calvaire and Rue d’Aix to that junction; an extension of the route adding about 1.6 km round trip. At the end of Rue d’Aix, go straight under the railway viaduct to the nearby junction 32 in the Preusbos. Once under the viaduct, there is also a parking area on the right (between junctions 32 and 45).

The route

From junction 32 (V), head towards the viaduct, turn left past the parking and after just 400 m you will reach junction 45. Continue straight downhill (railway on the right) towards 36. There, you briefly come onto a road called Rue Haute (the rest of the route consists of ‘slow roads’). At 36, turn left and after 1 km head towards 60, where the direction changes at times. Be careful to watch out for the signposts. Once you are off the paved road (after about 300 m): stay in the forest! Follow the winding path, and after a while, you will also arrive at a half-fallen tree; there, keep left always heading towards 60 on an ascending path. At a crossroad (junction 60), turn right towards 74. After 200 m, you will already reach 74, where there is also a wooden shelter (1). Here, turn left towards 7. Up the hill, first gently then steeper, and at the top continue straight, downhill and just before you reach 7, steeply uphill. Here is a wooden sign saying ‘Gemmenich’. Follow here to the right towards 20 on a wider path. You are now walking at a higher altitude. After quite a distance, you will reach 20. Continue straight towards Aachen (sign) and junction 87. You quickly reach 87 over asphalt, where you turn left onto a wider asphalt road to 86. After 300 m, you reach junction 86. Continue here on a sometimes winding asphalt road to junction 37, where you reach the goal of the trip, the Three Country Point (Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany) (2) and the top of the Vaalserberg (the highest 'mountain’ in the Netherlands). Here, you can visit the 50 m high King Baudouin Tower (unique panorama) and admire various old boundary stones. Further towards junction 27 over a narrow path, littered with stones and steep downhill. Sturdy footwear is essential! At 27, turn right towards the starting point junction 32 over more than 3 km. It first continues steeply downhill, along the railway, then back into the forest, continuously up and down. The route is well marked. After your trip, you can also visit the beautiful park with Stations of the Cross in Moresnet-Chapelle.
