Cycling along the towpaths by the canals – including the 120 km long Albert Canal that connects Antwerp with Liège – is delightful. At the lock complex in Wijnegem, you can seamlessly join the Waterways Route. You then cycle in a ‘blue’ triangle with the Albert Canal, the Schoten-Turnhout-Dessel Canal, and the Antitank Canal. The latter was dug after World War I to defend the city of Antwerp and today serves as a lovely green belt. This Waterways Route is 30 km long and follows the cycling junction network.
