Directions to Doorslaar
Doorslaar, a close-knit community in the middle of greenery, where a wine guild found its spot, the strawberries are sweeter than in Hoogstraten, where the postman still knows everyone, where time sometimes seems to pass more slowly and beautifully… We start at the picnic area at the beginning of the old tram route at the corner of Doorslaardorp and Doorslaarstraat. This place was home to the tram station on the line from Overmere to Ghent between 1911 and 1943, where coal and water were also loaded onto the steam tram. We leave the St. Joseph Chapel to the left and walk into Doorslaardorp. A few hundred meters further, we see the former boys’ school on our right side, now a trendy place for garden decorations.
A little further, we leave the Verdommenisse (now: Galgendreef) to the right and continue on to the OLV Parish Church from 1842. A walk around the church is worth the detour. Remarkably, there are 7 chapels depicting the life of Nicholas of Tolentino.
We continue on our way, keeping the same direction and passing by the current green primary school. A little further, we arrive at the Kaaswinkeldreef on the right, which we enter. Now we walk for a while between the residential buildings. Then the road turns into a hardened field path. Now we take the first road on the left, which we come back to after a few hundred meters, here we follow number 85 of the cycling route network Waasland until we reach Doorslaardam. We turn left here and walk to the next OLV chapel. Here we take a right onto Veldeken. In this street, we almost immediately see the home base of the Reynaert beer and wine guild.
We continue down this rural street until we reach the 90° bend to the left, then to the next right angle where we continue straight ahead onto a concrete path. We follow this path to the T-junction where we turn left. Thus, we come to another T-junction where we turn left again, then a right turn and then a left. This brings us into an area where very different sites are located: the cemetery, the training ground for the Crusaders and their horses, and 3 football fields of SK Lokeren-Doorslaar with a new canteen since 2007. We leave the cemetery on the right and walk into the Schraagveld. At the end, we return to the village where the right is indicated to reach the starting and ending point. The presence of 2 inns in the village gives you the opportunity to possibly compensate for any lost fluids.
