It is situated at the end of the Val d'Hérens south of Sion at 1998m altitude in the Pennine Alps. It is situated at the foot of Mont Collon and is a popular start point for mountain expeditions.
The village is a popular stop-off point on the Haute Route, a classic high-altitude mountain trek between Chamonix and Zermatt. The expedition can be traversed either by foot in the summer, or in the winter and spring on skis. It is also on the itinerary of the Patrouille des Glaciers.
