The Castle of Chillon is located in a very unique place. The reason for building the castle on this rock point in Lake Geneva is its strategic position: steeply sloping rocks on one side and, on the other side, the lake, which descends to a depth of 300 meters at this spot. In the Bronze Age, there was no path around the lake; the route passed 200 meters higher over the rocks at this location. The Romans opened a narrow path along the lakeshore. They also opened the Great St. Bernard Pass, making these routes at that time the only route between Northern and Southern Europe. Later, in the Middle Ages, the amount of traffic increased, which allowed for the collection of tolls.
