The Dufour Bridge was a temporary military pontoon bridge over the Rhine in Basel, which existed from January to March 1857.
When a military attack by the Prussians seemed possible during the Neuchâtel trade, General Guillaume-Henri Dufour issued the order on January 7, 1857, to construct a pontoon bridge at the then Harzgraben, about 100 meters above the present-day Wettstein Bridge, to ensure sufficient bridge capacity for rapid troop movements across the Rhine. At that time, the Middle Bridge was still the only crossing of the Rhine in Basel.
