The Command Center K20 is a bunker complex in the vicinity of Swiss Kandersteg of the Federal Council.
On August 26, 2008, Der Spiegel published a long-kept secret on its website. During the Cold War, in the early 1980s, the then ultra-secret bunker complex Führungsanlage K20 was excavated in the massif of Blüemlisalp. Switzerland has a very large number of atomic bunkers, whereby for decades the construction of larger residential units has always required the incorporation of an atomic bunker. The quip states that in an atomic war, only the American government, some species of insects, and the entire Swiss population would survive. K20, the bunker for the Swiss Federal Council, near Kandersteg, accommodates the government, military leaders, and advisors. The construction cost 259 million Swiss francs. It can accommodate several hundred people and has an autonomy of six months against nuclear, biological, and chemical attacks. Access to parking garages, where government limousines and military vehicles can be stored, is via a car tunnel. After a secure entry with, among other things, an iris scanner, there is a small metro line that takes visitors to the center of K20 in a 5-minute ride. There are two known additional accesses to the bunker, one in the Lötschberg tunnel, the other higher up in the Gasterntal. External communication is possible through a complete radio and television studio, in addition to a video conference room for meetings. In addition to this large bunker complex, another bunker was built for each canton. The maintenance of a total of 19 bunkers costs one million Swiss francs annually.
