The Zähringer Bridge is a road bridge over the Saane in Freiburg, Switzerland. The current structure was built in 1924 on the site of a suspension bridge known in French as Grand Pont, which had the longest span in the world at its completion in 1834, measuring 273 m.
The tender for the renewal of the Grand Pont included the reconstruction of the existing suspension bridge or the construction of a solid arch bridge. An expert commission evaluated the various projects presented by construction companies. As a height of at least 3 m was deemed necessary for the stiffening girder of a new suspension bridge, and since the Saane Valley only has a depth of 50 m, it was decided for aesthetic reasons not to use the old construction form again. The commission's vote favored a solid viaduct with a series of openings of equal width.
