ALPEN_INFO AT THE STARTING POINT OF THE ITINERARY

Beschrijving

The Alps were formed as a result of plate tectonics. Due to the collision of continental plates (the Eurasian plate and the African plate), the formation of mountains occurs. During the formation of mountains, parts of the Earth's crust are pushed upward, folded, and thrust over one another.
The Alps are home to many large European rivers, such as the Rhône, the Rhine, the Po, and the Inn. The passes are part of the watersheds of these rivers. A watershed is the boundary between two river basins. A river basin is the area that drains into a river. From the Alps, water flows via the Rhine to the North Sea, via the Rhône to the Mediterranean Sea, via the Inn and the Danube to the Black Sea, and via the Adda and the Po to the Adriatic Sea.
In the valleys, it is often warm in summer with clear weather; the average daily temperature is around 16°C. In the mountains, on the other hand, summers are cloudy, and above 1,500 meters, the daily average temperature barely exceeds 10°C. On the highest peaks of the mountains, the temperature barely exceeds freezing point, and there are eternal snows and ice.
Summer is the wettest time of the year, when there are often heavy showers and thunderstorms. Because depressions are pushed against the mountains, they eventually cause precipitation against the slopes of the mountains. This precipitation is called orographic rainfall and is responsible for the humid character of the Alps.

In the image (edited): Relief in Switzerland
Ten percent of the landscape is occupied by the Jura, a low mountain range in the northwest. Sixty percent of the landscape is occupied by the Alps, a high mountain range that stretches from southwest to northeast. Thirty percent of the landscape is occupied by the Swiss plateau (Mittelland), a hilly region between the Jura and the Alps.
On the map, the area where the route is plotted is circled.
