The watchtower Bürkli was part of the late Roman Danube-Iller-Rhine limes and is located in the territory of the municipality of Möhlin, district of Ryburg, in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland.
The late antique watchtowers on the High Rhine are among the most significant Roman legacies on the territory of present-day Switzerland. They were built in the 3rd and 4th centuries and were part of a surveillance and alarm chain that was intended to secure the southern Rhine bank against invaders from free Germania. It is likely that there was also such a late Roman border security facility on the so-called Bürkli, and at the same location, the Carolingian-Ottonian "Ryburg" was established in the early Middle Ages, which likely served to defend against the incursions of the Magyars in the first half of the 10th century.
