The Fully Vertical Kilometer was unofficially established in 1998. Members of the local ski mountaineering team Team La Trace decided to try out this discipline during their summer training. For a playground, they chose the linear route of the old funicular railway that connected the pure hydropower plant with a place called Les Garettes. This funicular was built in 1912 as an access road to the Fully dam. The funicular was subsequently discontinued, but the tracks were left in place, creating a pre-drawn route. The first official edition took place on November 3, 2001. The course was designed for an altitude difference of exactly 1,000 meters. With its very steep, straight profile (average 52 %), it is only 1,920 meters long. This fast course attracts the best skyrunning specialists who set record times in the vertical kilometer exercise.
