Since reunification, the Harz has been more central than ever in the greater Germany. It is also the highest region in central and northern Germany. Once upon a time, the Iron Curtain ran right through it. You hardly feel it, but until 1989 this was an extremely dangerous zone. You are right on the former border along which many residents of the former GDR fled to the West, but where many more refugees have lost their lives. The Brocken, the highest point (1142 m), was located just east of the border between East and West Germany. The place can be called historic for another reason. The Torfhaus transmitter mast that has been there since 1955 to be precise, was a very important link in the struggle between East and West Germany. From this location it was possible to provide the inhabitants of the former GDR with Western (uncensored) radio and television.
