Steinbach is a district of the independent city of Baden-Baden and has 4,054 inhabitants.
It was first mentioned in writing in 1070 in the Codex Hirsaugensis.
On August 23, 1258, King Richard of Cornwall granted city rights to the town of Steinbach at the request of Margrave Rudolf I of Baden, following the example of Freiburg.
Around the year 1300, a city wall was built, enclosing a square area of around one and a half hectares. It had two gates: the southern Bühler Gate with a prison on the second floor and the northern Badener Gate. Steinbach was the administrative seat of the Baden office of Steinbach.
