Behind these not-so-great-looking façades lies a small neighborhood known as the Nicolaiviertel. This part of the city has almost the same history as the Hackesche Höfe: only after a long period of decline did restoration follow, during the 750th anniversary of Berlin -1987- still in the DDR era. Many travel guides are somewhat dismissive of this neighborhood, which is not entirely fair.
