Achter deze niet geweldig mooie gevels ligt een klein stadswijkje dat het Nicolaiviertel heet. Dit gedeelte van de stad heeft bijna dezelfde geschiedenis als de Hackesche Höfe: pas na een grote periode van verval volgde de restauratie, bij het 750 jarig bestaan van Berlijn -1987- nog in de DDR-tijd. In veel reisgidsjes wordt wat schamper gedaan over deze wijk, niet helemaal terecht.
