The former Berlin Cathedral was from 1536 to 1747 the first cathedral church of Berlin. It was located in the historical center of the city at the southern portal II of the then Berlin City Palace, where next to it there was a medieval jousting arena, the steeple. Projected onto the present urban location, the church stood on the southern part of Schlossplatz, roughly between the later State Council building erected by the GDR and the building used by the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" at the Marstall.
Subsequent constructions of a cathedral church took place from 1747 to 1750, as well as in the form of the current Berlin Cathedral from 1894 to 1905. However, these cathedral buildings were not constructed at the original location but approximately 300 meters further north between Lustgarten, Altes Museum, the banks of the Spree, and Liebknecht Bridge.
