Walk along the Neues Museum, cross the water and go to the right. At the next bridge on the right is the Pergamon Museum. The museum dates back to 1930. It is the last museum to open its doors on Museumsinsel. The museum was specially built for the collection of antiquities. The massive size of the collection means that the museum occupies the entire space between the Neues Museum, National Gallery, and the S-Bahn.
The Pergamon Museum displays findings from Southeast Europe and the Near East. Among them are several large structures. The museum owes its name to the Pergamon Altar, which occupies a central place in the building. Another attraction is the market gate of Miletus. Both works are reconstructed in their original state and size in specially designed halls. After Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Pergamon is the most visited museum in Germany.
