The Porta Nigra is one of the best-preserved city gates of the Roman Empire. The massive gate was built together with the city wall and other gates of the same kind in the last third of the 2nd century AD. It is made of large blocks of light sandstone quarried in the vicinity of the city, which were stacked without mortar and connected by lead-cast iron clamps.
In the early 11th century, the hermit Simeon had himself locked up in the eastern tower of the Porta Nigra. In his honor, a chapter was established after his death and the Roman city gate was converted into a double church. This transformation is what has allowed the Porta Nigra to endure to this day.
