Ludendorff Bridge

Description

The Ludendorff Bridge is better known as the Bridge of Remagen. In the final phase of World War II, it was one of the few remaining bridges over the Rhine, and the Americans captured it on March 7, 1945. The remaining towers of the bridge stand as silent witnesses in the landscape. One tower now houses the Peace Museum, which tells the story of the history, the capture of the bridge, the daily life of the soldiers who guarded it, and the victims. Among them were also four German officers, shot on Hitler's orders because they did not demolish the bridge. The Bridge of Remagen is a symbol of Europe's liberation; its capture truly marked the end of World War II.

Remagen is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
