The site of many a Cold War showdown, Checkpoint Charlie was where American and Soviet soldiers faced each other across a heavily guarded border post, a chink in the all-but-impenetrable Berlin Wall. Little remains of the Checkpoint itself, but the small museum nearby is full of rich detail on the history of the Wall. It also documents, in a motley array of exhibits, the curious, courageous—and often deadly—attempts by legions of East Germans to cross the Wall, here or elsewhere along the border. (Some dug tunnels, others tried hot-air balloons.)
