Jena was a center of science and literature in the late 18th-begining of the 19th century. The cradle of German idealism and German Romanticism. The university was one of the most famous in the country. The poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller worked here at the University of Jena. You can still see his bust here in Jena. Schiller was also a good friend of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who lived about 25 km away in Weimar. The brother of the famous scientist Alexander von Humboldt also lived here in Jena, together with his young family.
