The municipality borders the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to the south, the municipality of Langenlehsten to the east and north, and the municipalities of Büchen and Witzeeze to the west.
The stream Riedebeck originates in the municipal area of Bröthen and forms the border with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the southwest, while the Delvenau is the border river of Bröthen to the west. Bröthen extends in the northeast into the Bergholzer Forest.
