Description

The municipality of Lawalde is located in the central part of the district. It lies about 5 km southwest of Löbau in the midst of the landscape protection area "Oberlausitzer Bergland". The highest elevations in the municipality are the Hochstein and the Kötzschauer Berg. The B178 runs east of the municipality. The Laubaer Wasser, a tributary of the Litte, flows through the village.

Lawalde was established by settlers as a forest strip village.
The first documentary mention dates back to 1290, made by Friedrich von Lewenwalde, the locator and namesake of the locality. Kleindehsa is first documented in a sales deed in the year 1242.
The Sleiffe brothers from Görlitz are mentioned in 1423 as the new owners of Lawalde.
By the end of the 15th century, Lawalde farmers had to pay an annual rent of 9.5 marks, as well as 25 scheffels of wheat and grain each to the landowners of Oppach at that time.
In 1495, the city of Löbau purchased the village for 600 schock groschen. Following the Upper Lusatian Peonage of 1547, noble landlords took over Lawalde.
In 1609, two manor houses - Niederlawalde and Oberlawalde - were formed at the expense of bought-out farmers, which were reunited in 1723 by Carl Gottlob von Ponickau.
A chronicle reports about him: “He was a harsh and cruel lord, who arbitrarily increased the court services significantly.”
In 1752, the entire village was purchased by a linen factor from Obercunnersdorf, whose two sons inherited the two Lawalde estates from their father in 1772.
In 1853, Lawalde became a rural municipality through the merger of Nieder- and Oberlawalde.
From 1939 to 1945, Lauba was incorporated.
