A significant testament to the more than 1,030-year history of the Emsland metropolis is the historic town hall. Since 1555, it has stood in the center of the old fortified university town. Over time, the largest city in the Emsland has developed into an important cultural center. Theater performances, cultural forums, concerts, and museums attract a wide audience. Traditions are kept alive in Lingen. Numerous festivals, such as the Kivelings festival held every three years or the annual old town festival, demonstrate a love for both tradition and modernity. Nature plays a decisive role in the lives of the people: vast forests and the river meadows of the Ems invite relaxation and numerous activities.
