Neuensalz is located in the center of the natural region of Vogtland in the Saxon part of the historical Vogtland. The southern part of the Pöhl dam is located within the municipality, including the pre-reservoir Neuensalz and the pre-reservoir Thoßfell. This was created by damming the Trieb, a tributary of the White Elster.
Adjacent municipalities in the Vogtlandkreis are Bergen, Pöhl, Theuma, the towns of Falkenstein, Treuen, and Plauen.
