Salem is a municipality in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein. It is located about seven kilometers from the district town of Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park. Bresahn and Dargow are located within the municipality.
The history of the place goes back to the Knights of Salem, who were among the most distinguished vassals of the county of Ratzeburg, established in 1154. On behalf of their lords, they founded several villages but moved to Mecklenburg in the 14th century. In the Middle Ages, the Müggenburg was located here on the western edge of today's nature reserve Salemer Moor, along with the village of Klein-Salem, which was already mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230. To this day, only the village of Salem, located at the northern tip of Lake Salemer, has survived. Since 1923, the Schaalsee has drained through the Phulsee, Pipersee, and Lake Salemer via the Schaalsee Canal into the Küchensee, which is part of Lake Ratzeburg. Since 1925, one of the few hydroelectric power plants in Schleswig-Holstein has been operated at Farchau. In 1928, the forest districts of Forstort, Eichhorst, and Hundebusch were merged with the rural community of Salem. In 1938, the municipality of Dargow was incorporated into the municipality of Salem. From 1948 to 2006, the municipality of Salem again belonged to the Gudow office, which was merged with the Sterley office in 1971 to form the Gudow-Sterley office.
