The municipal area of Büttel extends to the east, directly adjacent to Brunsbüttel on the banks of the Lower Elbe in the natural region of Wilstermarsch. The Elbe dike runs somewhat inland here and reveals a foreshore area that serves as a retention area for high water levels in the estuary. It is under nature protection and is colloquially known as "Außendeich" or in Low German "Butendiek." Here lies a rise called "Bösch," which once served as a pilot station. The watercourse formerly known as the Burg-Kudensee Canal runs approximately in a north-south direction through the district but is now much too narrow for shipping with modern vessel dimensions. Its direct access to the Elbe is now closed off. Only the old lock building remains to remind us of the former trading harbor that had direct access to the Elbe.
