The district of Oberthal is the namesake district of the municipality of Oberthal in the district of St. Wendel in Saarland and constitutes its own municipal district.
The district of Oberthal emerged from the former independent villages of Imweiler, Osenbach, and Linden. With the decree of September 22, 1823, the official name "Oberthal" was declared as of October 1, 1823. The area belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine from around 1200 until 1766, when it passed to the Kingdom of France through inheritance. By treaty on November 15, 1786, the Kingdom of France ceded this area to the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken. During the French occupation, Oberthal formed its own Marie.
