Sommerau is the smallest local community of the Verbandsgemeinde Ruwer in the district of Trier-Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate. The village has the ruins of Sommerau Castle. The Ruwer with the Sommerau Waterfall is a tributary of the Moselle.
The village of Sommerau was first mentioned in a document in 1271, in which the Trier citizen Johann Walram exchanges the place, referred to in the document as "Sernauwe," for other properties that go to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier.
