Hohenrode is one of the 31 districts of the district-free city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony, located in the village of Süd. With its location on the border with the district of Goslar, it is the southernmost and also the smallest district of Salzgitter.
The name of the village is derived from the term "high-altitude clearing", which is located on a terrace above the Innerste. The name suffix "rode" indicates that the village was founded in the clearing phase of the 11-12th century. The location of the settlement was probably chosen because there was a ford leading through the nearby Innerste. At that time, its valley was heavily swampy and only here, where the valley was severely narrowed by the nearby Gitterberg, was reasonably passable.
