Großenbaum

The origin dates back to the time of medieval agricultural settlements. Originally, the entire area of today's Großenbaum was covered with forest. It belonged to the Amt of Angermund and was part of the Huckinger Gemarkenwald, the so-called Grindsmark, the eastern part of which still exists today. The first settlers documented here are the married couple Jan and Bede Meypels. Near the road to Saarn, they built their house here in 1532 on the large tree. This large tree was the barrier of a Bergisch customs office. At that time, the Landwehr running here protected the northern border of the Duchy of Berg against the Duchy of Cleves. The customs office was located near today's Duisburg-Großenbaum station of the old Cologne-Minden railway.
