Sülfeld is the westernmost district of Wolfsburg, which lies in the valley of the Mühlenriede stream. Close to the village is the Sülfeld lock, built in 1938, the only lock on the Mittelland Canal between Hanover and Magdeburg. The district includes the lock settlement outside the built-up area. It was created in the 1930s by the construction of twelve residential buildings for lock workers.
Thietmar of Merseburg reports in his chronicle of a miracle that occurred in Silivellun in the second week of December 1017. It is the first known mention of the village of Sülfeld near Fallersleben. Sülfeld was first mentioned in a document as the estate of Sulefelde in 1339, the Markus-Kirche of the village as early as 1318. Another place was mentioned in 1360, when Duke Magnus of Brunswick-Lüneburg bequeathed part of the village to the Cistercian monastery of Riddagshausen near Brunswick. North of the church was the clustered village of Sülfeld, which already had 21 residential sites in 1489. An estate located in the southern part of the village was already dissolved in the 19th century as part of the coupling. The population of 564 in 1939 doubled as a result of the influx of war refugees after the Second World War. Due to the job offer at the nearby Volkswagen plant, it has increased to over 3000 inhabitants today.
