Together with the Westviertel, the Nordviertel, the Südviertel, the Ostviertel and the Südostviertel, the Stadtkern forms Essen's "Stadtmitte". The city centre is the smallest district of Essen in terms of area.
On Kettwiger Straße, on Burgplatz, is the Essen Cathedral, the nucleus of the city. The church was the church of the Essen convent, founded around 845 by Altfrid, Bishop of Hildesheim. Between 1244 and 1865, the Essen city wall enclosed almost exactly the area of today's Stadtkern district.
