Karnap measures 2.1 kilometers from north to south and 1.6 kilometers from east to west. To the south of the district, the Rhein-Herne Canal, which runs parallel to the Emscher, forms the boundary with the neighboring districts of Altenessen and Vogelheim. To the west, Karnap borders Bottrop, to the north Gladbeck, and to the east Gelsenkirchen. The district features the lowest point of Essen at 26.5 meters above sea level.
