Fischlaken is a district in the southern part of the city of Essen. It is predominantly a rural district with forest areas, agricultural enterprises, but also denser residential neighborhoods.
A number of tools, particularly flint stones, have been found in agricultural land. Some of them date back to the Bronze Age, others to the Mesolithic, and the oldest remnants from the period around 30,000 BC, which is referred to as the Paleolithic. Pits and postholes from ancient times also suggest a very early settlement.
