The "Bremer Stadtmusikanten" or "the Musicians of Bremen" is a folktale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. A donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster, were all mistreated by their masters. One by one they leave their homes and set out together to go to the "free" Bremen. They plan to be musicians there. On the way to Bremen, they see a cottage. They don't realize there are robbers inside and start singing for them to get some food, standing on each others backs. Because the sound is so awful, the men run for their lives. The animals take possession of the house, eat a good meal, and settle in for the evening. Although the robbers come back, the Musicians of Bremen can scare them away again and the animals live happily for the rest of their days in the cottage.
Despite the title of the fairy tale the animals never actually arrive in Bremen.
