The Alsterarkaden in Hamburg, named after the architectural term arcade, date back to designs by Alexis de Chateauneuf for the newly created Hamburg Town Hall Market.
After the destruction of the Town Hall in the Great Fire of 1842, a new building was planned. For the design of the Town Hall Market at the confluence of the Alster, the Alsterfleet, a basin was created in front of the dam of the lock bridge, known as the Kleine Alster. Chateauneuf designed a rounded arcade on the west side in the Italian style, whose original color was ochre yellow according to new findings, but which was later to be plastered white and has preserved this characteristic appearance to this day. After various changes, the original condition was restored in 1951, and the color remained white. The Alsterarkaden are considered a prominent example of the so-called post-fire architecture.
