Boppard

Boppard was originally a Celtic settlement that later came into Roman hands. Remnants from this period can still be seen in the Angert and Steinstrasse. The Lelientor, the Kronertor, and the Bingertor are remnants of the later medieval fortifications in Boppard. If you are shopping in the Oberstrasse, take a moment to check out the Marktplatz. Here, during Roman times, baths for soldiers were installed. When the soldiers retreated in the 5th century, the bathhouses were transformed into the St. Severus Church. The baptismal font dates back to that time. Notable are the wall paintings that adorn the interior. In the nave, they tell the story of St. Severus, the church's patron saint. On the right aisle, there are ceiling paintings of Christ and various saints. At the end of the Rheinallee stands the Carmelite Church from the early 1300s, a church without towers. The Gothic church does have a particularly beautiful altar and fine wood carvings. You can view a collection from the Roman period in the Bergfried from 1340. The Bergfried is located on Burgstrasse and is well worth a visit.
