The castle was built between 1612 and 1616 by the sculptor and architect Gerhard Gröninger, on the foundations of the 13th-century House of Darfeld.
The building, built in yellow sandstone, was originally intended to be an eight-wing building in Baroque style. Due to a disagreement between the client, knight Jobst von Vörden, and the architect, this did not come about. Only two of the eight wings were erected. Presumably due to financial problems, the castle changed hands regularly in a short period of time, until it came into the hands of the Droste zu Vischering family in 1680. The nun Mary of the Divine Heart, beatified by Pope Paul VI, spent her childhood in Darfeld.
