The Schönhauser Allee was the most important nightlife street in East Berlin during the GDR era. Here were the famous cafés and restaurants, and here were most of the shops. The Schönhauser Allee is still the largest shopping street in Prenzlauer Berg. Further down the street (near the Schönhauser Allee U-Bahn station; we will come back to that later during this walk) lies, for example, the Schönhauser Arcaden, a three-story shopping center that was built here after the Wende.
