Falkenhof Museum Rheine

Description

The Falcon's Court, the former royal court "Reni", is located on the slope of the Thieberg, which gently descends towards the Ems, i.e., towards the former ford near the weir. During the Saxon Wars of Charlemagne (768-814), it was supposed to serve as a military base to secure the Ems ford, but lost its significance with the end of the war (804). Thus, Emperor Louis the Pious (814-840) donated the estate "Reni" to the Benedictine convent of Herford on June 7, 838. The settlement of Rheine gradually developed around the royal court "Reni", to which Bishop Ludwig II of Münster granted city rights in 1327. Since 1962, the Municipal Museum has been located in the Falcon's Court.

The museum possesses a large collection of weapons, an archaeological collection, a significant art collection, and much more.

In 2003, during construction work, an underground canal system was discovered - a subterranean structure of 60 meters in length. Here, the waste of the noble families living here was collected for over 250 years. Between 1521 and 1799, the family von Morrien managed the estate. The sensational find consists of ceramics, glass, leather, metal, and wood.
