Altenkrempe is a municipality north of Neustadt in Holstein in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the village of Altenkrempe, it includes the localities of Hasselburg, Jarkau, Kassau, Klaushorst, Mühlenkamp, Plunkau, Rogerfelde, Sibstin, Sierhagen, and Stolpe.
In 1170, Crempine is mentioned for the first time in the Chronica Slavorum of Helmold von Bosau as a body of water, as the origins of Altenkrempe are Slavic. The place name "Crempene," derived from this water name, originates from an old Slavic word: either from "cręp" meaning "water" or from "crępina" meaning "small, insignificant" or from a folk etymological connection of both words. The place name Crempene appears in official documents for the first time in 1197 after being Germanized by Duke Adolf III.
