The Isenburg in Hattingen, referred to in ancient documents as Burg Isenberg, was built for Arnold von Altena (1173–1209) on the Isenberg west of the city between the years 1193 and 1199. Destroyed in 1225, the castle is now preserved as a ruin on a steep rocky promontory above the Hattingen Ruhr loop. Within the ruins stands the Custodis country house from the 19th century.
