The Cathedral of Mary and Cecilia in Verden was the cathedral of the former Roman Catholic Diocese of Verden. After the introduction of the Reformation in 1568 until the Peace of Westphalia, the cathedral was the seat of the Lutheran prince-bishops of Verden. Today it is the church of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation.
The Romanesque cathedral from around 1160 fell prey to a fire towards the end of the 13th century. The massive tower of this building has been preserved. Above two floors of sandstone, it is built of brick of Italian form. And originally, he was free – a real Italian campanile. In the Renaissance period, its west wall was clad with sandstone.
